The Discarded by Steven Aron Williams
The Discarded by Steven Aron Williams
A visit to the Killing Fields provoked this piece. It addresses our attitudes to loss of life on a scale which we find difficult to comprehend. We become complacent in thinking that history won’t repeat itself despite evidence to the contrary. From war crimes to COVID-19, to the plight of immigrants across the world, it is the loss of individual humanity which in some ways makes these victims unrelatable. To be a statistic doesn’t conjure empathy in the masses; a tactic often weaponised for political means.
